Philippi was a very rich city filled with educated and successful people, many of whom were retired elite from Rome. It was the first Church on European soil, so the spread of Christianity to Europe start here. Paul wrote the book of Philippians from a prison cell in Rome, 11 years after he started the Church in Philippi.
